The Spiritual Energy of Money

In this world we live in, one cannot get too far with procurement of needs and wants without money. In fact, it has been said that “money makes the world go ‘round.” You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would turn down an offer of a bag of money. Some even risk life and limb for it and sell out their good conscience for it. And yet, they say …

“Money is the root of all evil.”

“More money, more problems.”

“Money can’t buy happiness.”

Where do these sayings come from and why does money get such a bad rep when literally EVERYONE wants it so badly? One thing most people don’t understand is that money is a representation of a living energy, vibration, or ‘spirit”. It is a vehicle for abundance that can produce prosperity, though it is not abundance itself. As with any energetic force, it can be manipulated to align with and yield positive results or negative results depending on the force behind it.

In Yoruba tradition, Ajé is the oriṣa of money and wealth. She is a feminine energy said to be the daughter of Olόkun who is the oriṣa of the ocean, wealth, success, wisdom, and the subconscious. Ajé actually is one part of the breadth of all that makes up who Olokun is and what the power of water represents. Ajé’s physical representation is a large cowrie seashell, or tiger cowrie, as cowries were used as money/currency in the old days. As Olόkun’s color is white and denotes purity, coolness, and peacefulness, so is Ajé’s. Ajé symbolizes money, wealth, and prosperity and this oriṣa is propitiated constantly by those who work in business or are merchants, but also anyone who is in need of a windfall to get a specific financial need met. Ajé is closely correlated with Ifá and one of the specific blessings that Ifá promises with the right adherence.

Ajé is compared to a woman, who is wooed with sweets, fine things, and clean, pleasant surroundings. She doesn’t like to be controlled, restrained, or amidst chaos and disharmony. She likes to come and go she pleases. She likes peace and is very generous. This is why her shrine is always kept clean, decorated with money, and offerings of honey, banana, eggs, efun (white chalk found in the waters), and white pigeon are her most favorite offerings so that she will stay and live with us. And if she does leave, she will always relocate and find us again. From building a relationship with this oriṣa, we can come to understand a lot about the spiritual energy of money so that it will always be a blessing and easily manifested.

1)      Money moves like a current. The force that causes the waters to ebb and flow, to and from, is the current that causes money to come and go. That’s why money is referred to as “currency”. It is SUPPOSED to flow. When money seems flighty, you mustn’t panic. Know that it will flow back to you, and often increased. You just have to set up the right mindset and circumstances for it to find you. It is often said, that you have to spend money to make money.

2)      Be generous. You have to give in order to get. The characteristics of both generosity and gratitude are extremely important to align with the energy of abundance. What you put out will eventually return to you and it is this vibration of knowing that you are always taken care of, will always have what you need when you need it, and you appreciate what you have right before you in the present that will attract and reveal abundance.

 3)      Associate things you value with your money. For money to be a blessing, and not a source of problems like the adage says, attach it to happiness, peace of mind, security, things of high worth. Spend it on only the things that fulfill you, bring you joy, health, love, wellbeing, and progress. This is what money is for. Make money from what makes you happy and feel a sense of purpose. It is used for an exchange of goods. Make sure your “goods” are actually good. This is how you experience prosperity. So, the next time you are hesitant because of cost to buy that beautiful piece of jewelry, that fragrance you love, take that trip, or enjoy that fine dining with a loved one, if it is within your means (not sacrificing basic needs), then do it! If it makes you happy and nurtures love and gratitude, then it is worth the cost. Stop being afraid of a price tag, if it sparks your joy and or peace of mind. Abundance is also a mindset.

4)      Don’t waste money on foolishness, useless things, or make money through means that are stressful, oppressive, or dishonest. Do not waste or even hoard money out of greed, fear, or insecurity. This is how money becomes a burden, brings problems and debt, and attracts negativity of an equal vibration. You will not be able to maintain the money, and even if you do, it will be at a cost. Money and abundance don’t stay with bad character. Even rich people who are greedy, selfish, and dishonest never feel as if they have enough and are never happy.

5)      Do not chase money, attract it to you. When you understand the law of attraction, you will know that vibrating on a high frequency of love, peace, light, sweetness, coolness, creativity, productivity, generosity, and humble gratitude will manifest just what you need. Focus, meditate, call it to you, and visualize it. Then, watch how quickly it will manifest. Constantly worrying about money and chasing the next dollar, especially without purpose or need, only reinforces a fear and insecure mindset.

Remember that money is just the physical object to exchange for the things and concepts that we value because we need or want them for our survival, comfort, and enjoyment. It cannot be a substitute for these things. First, you have to go within to know yourself and what brings you peace, joy, and purpose. Then align your mindset and actions to these things and watch money follow as a means for you to receive.
